pinball machine Service outlet uses
One essential component found inside many pinball machines is the service outlet—a built-in electrical socket typically located within the machine’s cabinet. While often overlooked, this simple feature provides a convenient tool in the maintenance, repair, and powering of accessories in the machine.
What is a service outlet?
A service outlet is a standard power outlet installed inside the cabinet of a pinball machine. The outlet is usually wired separately from the main game circuits, ensuring it remains active even when the machine is powered off. Service outlets vary in their location as well as form by pinball machine manufacturers. There are many commonalities but some important differences too! The Stern Spike 2 machine for example is one of the systems that offers a Service Outlet in the backbox (vs. the cabinet) as shown in this image.

Many but not all pinball machines designed for U.S. distribution include a service outlet, however some require an adapter to allow the use of a standard 3-prong electrical plug. Many older Williams games as well as modern Chicago Gaming Remakes require this adapter. If you have an older game, you may find that your adapter has gone missing and a replacement may be necessary.

Pinball machines are manufactured primarily in the United States, where standard electrical outlets operate at 120V, 60Hz. However, in many other countries, electrical systems use 220-240V, 50Hz with different plug types. When pinball machines are distributed internationally, manufacturers typically modify the power supply to accommodate regional voltage requirements. The service outlet may also be adjusted or removed depending on local regulations. International pinball machines may have variations depending on voltage, plug type, and electrical regulations. Best bet is to know what you have- the more you know!
key uses of a service outlet
There are five basic ways that most owners and operators use the pinball machine service outlet.
Powering Diagnostic and Repair Tools
When servicing a pinball machine, owners or technicians often use various electrical tools, such as soldering irons (the Weller is our favorite) and multimeters. The service outlet provides a super convenient power source inside the machine, eliminating the need to run extension cords from external wall outlets. This makes repairs and maintenance more efficient, especially where space and power sources may be limited.

Using a Work Light
Pinball machines have complex wiring, circuit boards, and mechanical components that can be difficult to see, especially in dimly lit environments or if you just can’t see that well! You can plug in a small work light or lamp into the service outlet, improving visibility and making it easier to inspect and repair those small below the playfield components.
Powering a Vacuum or Cleaning Equipment
Keeping a pinball machine clean is essential for optimal performance and long life. Dust, debris, and even small metal shavings can accumulate inside the cabinet over time. The service outlet allows owners to plug in a small vacuum cleaner, air blower, or this combo blower/vacuum to remove unwanted particles from the playfield and internal components.
Powering Accessories
The service outlet provides a safe alternative to power sources that run on the games main electrical circuitry. By using the service outlet, game owners can safely power after market pinball mods and accessories such as toppers, speaker light kits or cabinet lighting kits. When adding accessories, care must be taken to avoid over taxing the games circuit boards. Don't over do it- know the amps you are using!
Running Software Updates or Programming Tools
Modern pinball machines often feature digital displays and software-based game logic that occasionally require updates. Some machines allow operators to connect a laptop or USB programming device to update firmware or modify game settings. The service outlet provides a nearby power source for such devices, simplifying the update process.
Important considerations when using a service outlet
While the service outlet is a helpful feature, there are a few precautions to keep in mind. Avoid overloading the circuit as service outlets are not designed for high-power devices. Plugging in equipment that draws excessive current could cause electrical issues or damage your pinball machine. Additionally, before using the service outlet, it is essential to ensure that it is properly wired and grounded to avoid electrical hazards.
The service outlet in a pinball machine is a small but invaluable feature that simplifies maintenance, repairs, cleaning and provides a safe power source for pinball mods and accessories. Whether you’re a home pinball machine owner, arcade owner, or pinball tech, understanding and utilizing the service outlet can be a great tool!
